Geocache Description:

A Historic cemetary a short walk from the town of Akaroa. It has steep lawns & is a leafy glade with heaps of bird-song

**CAUTION** If there are children in your group, keep them away from the headstones. a lot are unstable after the recent earthquake.
Cemetary is safe to enter, but use common sense thanks.

Akaroa was founded in 1840 by French settlers, and this Catholic cemetery contains the graves of many of these early pioneers, including my forebears Francois Etienne LeLievre and Justine Rose LeLievre (nee deMalmanche)and her parents Emeri & Rose de Malmanche. When they arrived in this land expecting rolling farmland, they were faced with virgin bush-clad hills which had to be cleared by axe and burning before any productive enterprise could be undertaken. Their first months were spent living in tents made from sails, on the beach, and Rose deMalmanche actually gave birth to a son in one of these tents only 2 months after arriving.
This cache is placed in memory of the great courage they showed in remaining in New Zealand and taking up the challenge. These were the true first Colonists in Canterbury
