My brother is an anomaly of diabetes because he was in his 30's when he suddenly became type 1 diabetic. He would always be the one eating the most fatty and sugar filled foods with reckless abandon. Until one Christmas a few years ago he ate almost a whole pound cake and drank a lot of grape juice because he said it helped his sore throat. When we went to WalMart the next day he could not read the department signs which was startling because just prior he had 20/20 vision. After 3 doctors giving him prescriptions for glasses he was finally correctly diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. The first insulin shot was the worst but now it is slightly easier. The financial strain is only marginally outweighed by the new very critical diet. The silver lining is that prior my brother was a huge party kid into all kinds of drugs and binge drinking. After diabetes he was forced to change his lifestyle and part of this was to get serious about his walk with the Lord. Now he is a Gospel-centered, Atkins dieting, insulin shooting, incredibly loving brother of mine.
