The First of a multi series taking Cachers on a Ghost Tour of Hobart. Coordinates now changed.
Tasmania is known as the Commonwealths most haunted state, and with the horrendous conditions of Port Arthur, Richmond and Salt River, it’s no surprise. This series, inspired by an incident at Gas Works Engineers, takes cachers on a tour of five well known hauntings in the Hobart area, and asks the question, “do you believe?”. Because of the stories of each area this series comes with an M rating….Horror Themes. Due to the placement and the aim of the series none of these caches can be completed during daylight hours. Caches one through four are small with no room for swaps and contain coordinates for cache five. To ensure the caches can be found glowing arrows will point the way and I guarantee a ghost at every cache. The final cache has gone towards the light and is no longer available.
The Shot Tower
Built by Joseph Moir in 1870, the Shot Tower was created for the express purpose of cooling lead shot for use in defending the colony. The molten lead was dripped though a sieve at the top of the tower and solidified on the journey down, until landing in vat of water at the bottom.
Moir was an eccentric who jealously guarded the secret of shot making, and refused to answer any questions about the shot process. He died suddenly in 1874. The Shot Tower is well known as a tourist attraction, and later custodians of the site have reported footsteps on the tower stairs, and a heavy iron door has a habit of moving by itself, opening or slamming shut. In 1990 a visitor spent two hours sitting at the top of the tower, and as she left she stated to the custodian, “there are many spirits here, but they all like you”.
A lady who drives past the tower regularly reports often seeing a light at the top of the tower, well after closing time.
The cache has been moved to a less open aspect and is in a carpark at the tower. Park at one of the car parks provided.
