Dunedin City, New Zealand

The South Island’s second largest city by population is best known as the home of Otago University, but also boasts spectacular sightseeing and historic wonders – as well as some of the country’s best fashion designers and shopping.

Visitors flock to Dunedin for the wealth of sporting opportunities, heritage landmarks and local wildlife. Highlights include: Larnach Castle – New Zealand’s only ‘real’ castle; Historic Dunedin Railway Station and spectacular Taieri Gorge Railway; Speights Brewery ; and the windswept Otago Peninsula – the site of the only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere and the perfect place to spot New Zealand fur seals, yellow-eyed penguins and their little blue cousins.

Waiora Scout Camp

Located just 15 minutes drive from Dunedin’s city centre, this campground was chosen for its modern facilities – including cabins and a commercial kitchen – as well as plenty of outdoor space for all the exciting MEGA activities planned.

Best of all, nestled amongst the beautiful bush and parkland that make up the neighbouring Silverstream Forest and Whare Flat Scenic Reserve, are dozens of geocaches waiting to be found. In fact, there are some 730 geocaches within a 50km radius of the venue.

Acommodation Options
There are bunks, cabins and unpowered camping sites available at the Waiora Scout Camp prices for these options will be listed on our web site closer to the timing of the event. There are also numerous hotels, motels, holiday parks and backpacker hostels in Mosgel and Dunedin.

Activities
There will be numerous organised activities planned over the period the Mega runs. More specific details will be made available on the Mega website as they are confirmed.

Catering
We will be providing catering for those who wish to participate in and socialise during group meals. In order to gain information about the number of people that we need to cater for (and so reduce waste), meals will need to be pre-purchased closer to the timing of the event. Our catering team will have arrangements in place for participants with special dietary needs.

Attendance Costs
NZ MEGA 2012 will cost NZD75 to attend for an individual, couple or family.

The Organisers
This MEGA Event is being organised and hosted by the New Zealand Recreational GPS Society Incorporated. For information about geocaching in New Zealand, visit the NZ Recreational GPS Society Forums.
