Geocache Description:

Here lies our beloved grandparents - and the first joint cache by geo-siblings Cumbyrocks and kjwx.

The final resting place for all three is Mt View Cemetery, located on State Highway 1 half a kilometre north of Calico Line Corner in the Rangitikei township of Marton

To the best of our knowledge, it originated around 1900 to accommodate the deceased parish members of the historic St Stephen's Church - and has long been a familiar landmark for our family, being sited on the same stretch of road as our grandparents' old farmhouse.

Our paternal grandfather Keith Walker died suddenly in 1979 - when we were toddlers - from a heart attack just as he was about to trade in his gumboots and farmdogs for a retirement of making wooden toys. Co-incidentally, another cache in nearby Hunterville at a statue celebrating local farmers and their favourite Huntaway dogs also honours him, though not through our doing.

His wife Peggy - or more formally Margaret (after the Queen) Stella (after the beer her father drank upon returning home from World War I) - never remarried but enjoyed her widowed years knitting up a storm for her four children, nine grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren as well as hundreds of needy kids from Manawatu to Masterton.

To us, she was a quintessential nana - complete with white hair, cardy and tins full of homemade baking - who walked everywhere and could stop a bus with one of her glares.

She died unexpectedly last Sunday a few months off her 90th birthday and we buried her a few days later at Mt View, next to the love of her life. Though Nana and Poppo are no longer with us in body, they will forever be in our hearts. We hope you enjoy their cache and take a moment to enjoy the view (and the break from driving!).
