There is no need to go over the edge at the end.
The ocean is nearby so be vigilant with any children that may be
with you. Watch out for wildlife (as we were placing the cache a
seal came to visit us, though it came towards us we did not move
towards him), don't get too close to them. Please do not take
dogs down the mole.
We wouldn't recommend doing this cache on a stormy day. There is
parking at S 45 46.572, E 170 42.703, but you will need to take a
short walk from there.
On a summer day there may be a lot of muggles so stealth may be
required.
Please remember that this is about
the experience, the chance to see wildlife (not to make them feel
threatened or uncomfortable - it is their home), and to
enjoy the coast we have available to us.
It is NOT about the numbers!
If you cannot get down the mole immediately perhaps you could go
for a walk down one of the beaches, or have a swim in the sea, or
even have a look at the salt marshes, via the board walk. If you
still have no luck, you could always come back another day - this
is a nice place that is definitely worth coming back to more than
once!
If this continues as previous logs have shown it will be gone by
sundown! And then people not from Dunedin will not have this
experience - DO NOT SPOIL THIS!
More information about the fur seals (kekeno) the are found on
the mole including appropriate ways to behave around these animals
can be found at the
Department of Conservation's web site.
