It's a special occasion not only here in Chicago, but world-wide! It was 10 years ago this week that President Clinton declared the end of Selective Availability for Satellites Signals and the following day Selective Availability was in fact turned off. Then is was on May 3, 2000 the Dave Ulmer hid his "stash" (the very first known and soon to be known as Geocache) near Portland Oregon and this awesome pastime we now call Geocaching would soon become a viral sensation. Now some 986,493 (as of 2/12/2010) active caches later here we are. So won't you please come and join us in celebrating 10 years of Geocaching in Chicago? We are coining this event "Geo Golf II - Signal's Birthday Party" and what is a birthday party with out cake?

We all have either done or heard of the infamous series (and now archived ) "Geo-Golf", which was the start of Geocaching in "Triads" in the Chicago area that led to other great series like Can Can, Box Box, Jar Jar, and who knows what is to follow. Well today we are having a little Geo-Golf BAT & Princess Style!!

Harry Semrow is a Cook County Forest Preserve owned Mini-Golf and and Driving Range facility. As last year (for those of you that were not at Geo Golf I - The Tournament), we have negotiated special pricing for those that wish to partake in what they have to offer. Also as last year there will be a "Mini-Golf Tournament" with prizes being offered in various categories. All attendees will be able to partake in free hot dogs, chips and birthday cake (of course), as long as you know the "secret password". Beverages will be available in the Pro Shop or feel free to bring your own.

So after a great day of caching in the Northwest Suburbs (be sure to check out Busse Woods - one of our favorites spots), stop on by for the Birthday Celebration and some Geo Golf!

Update 2-14-2010: I have received confirmation from Robert Reindl (Illinois' first know Geocacher and Owner of the Geocaching Icon Beverly - GC28) and he will be attending the event to tell us all about how Geocaching was in the very beginning!

Update 2-15-2010: A special commemorative coin is being minted honoring the 10 years of Geocaching (a mock up can be seen here) and will be available at the event in limited quantities. The coin details are as follows: 1.75” x 3mm, 2D, Imitation hard enamel, Polished finish, Rim text and laser engraving, Groundspeak tracking, Custom icon. We will be choosing our own color that will only be available only at this event, stay tuned for further details.

Update 2-25-2010: Oak Coins has sent out the invoice for the coins and it has been paid with delivery expected near the end of April. We have gotten a number of inquiries about "how do I get a coin", they will be available on a first come first served basis at both of the events being held on May 1st. We are also taking pre-orders and if you are interested in that we can send you a PayPal invoice so you can reserve in advance.
