Growing up in the '80s, me and some of my friends believed that
this area on the side of the mountain across from Tipton was a
national monument. It's not. Although this clearing of bare,
bleached rubble doesn't look quite as good as it did in my youth,
it still looks distinctly like an eagle in flight. To the best of
my knowledge, this is only a fascinating natural feature on the
mountainside.
As the cache name implies, this cache is hidden near the "head" of
the eagle. Also as the cache name implies, you will be privy to an
amazing eagle's view of Tipton and the surrounding valley.
As with any arduous trek, please plan ahead before attempting this
cache. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for rough terrain and
the weather, and don't forget to bring some water. This is not a
far hike, but you will be exerting some energy. The climb up
involves traversing very steep, rocky and uneven ground. Please be
wary of snakes at all times. Though I haven't heard or seen any up
here, I know that they are around. I'm sure your agree that this is
prime real estate for rattlers.
Blaze Orange is required during hunting season as this area is
heavily hunted during the primary seasons.
There are really two approaches to this cache. (1) park just north
of the eagle at the pull-off along Skelp Mountain Road and hike
south to the eagle's tail. Then, climb up the debris field to the
cache. or (2) hike along the top of the ridge to just above the
cache. I prefer the first method, however, this is not for
everyone.
This cache's container has been changed to a regular Ammo box.
After re-climbing and reassessing other cacher's opinions, I have
upped the D/T rating to 3/4.5.
Again, please be appropriately prepared and be careful. Also, some
of the land below the eagle IS posted. Please do not enter into or
trespass onto private property. As always, cache-in,
trash-out!
