Geocache Description:

Another in XC and TK's Tongariro Cache series...

XC and TK have had many positive comments about the Tongariro Cache series so have decided to add another.

As with the other caches on the Ketetahi Side of the mountain you have the option of an easier walk up from the Ketetahi Track car park. Or if you are doing the Tongariro Alpine crossing you can be rewarded with a pause to find this one at a feature point on the downward track.


Ketetahi Springs


Steam rises from the Ketetahi Springs, on the northern slope of Mt Tongariro. They take their name, which means ‘one basket’, from an episode involving the Te Arawa ancestor Ngatoroirangi. Atop the cold mountain, he summoned three baskets of fire. However, only one arrived, which he threw onto the side of Tongariro.

The Ketetahi Springs are on private land. Ketetahi Trust (who administers the area) has agreed to allow use of the track over their land, as sign-posted. However there is no right of access to Ketetahi Springs (pools).

The cache is a small cylinder in a TK camo bag with room for only very small items. It contains a logbook and a gel pen but take your own in case environment affects pen in cache.
In the afternoon you will need stealth as there will be a constant stream of trampers coming down the track.
Please use small rock to keep the cache in place when replacing.
