A cache at the end of a hike in Glacier National Park.
Balu Pass Trail is a hike on the north side of Rogers Pass in
Glacier National Park. The hike starts at Rogers Pass Center and
climbs for 2.5 hrs up to a viewpoint behind Cheops Mountain. Views
of Mr. Bonney, Ursus Major, Grizzly Mountain, Ursus Minor, Mount
McDonald, and Abbot Ridge are seen with a 360 degree perspective.
The trail is built to Parks Canada standards, getting the hiker to
a high point with a good climb, but an excellent trail. It is bear
country, though, and hikers should check in at the kiosk at the
trailhead to check on conditions before setting out.
Much of the hike is in open terrain with waterfalls, wildflowers,
rock slopes, and sub-alpine vegetation. There are many
opportunities for good photos for the whole hike.
This is a cache for hikers, not for novices. It is one of the
finest hikes in our province, but hikers need to be prepared to
enter the high alpine (even in the best weather).
The cache is placed only a few metres from the end of the trail and
will make an easy find. Following Parks Canada regulations, this is
a small container with log and pencil only.
Note - From Balu Pass, the trail down to Cougar Creek is closed in
the summer to protect grizzly habitat and visitors need a special
eprmit and a certified guide to check out Nakimu Caves.
