I figured since the storm of the century was occurring outside (12/18/07), I’d make a mostly INDOOR cache. We took my nephew here today, and I was inspired this morning to take notes on this large piece of aviation history.
This cache takes you though the entire Air Force Museum. I hope you enjoy it. As a child, I used to come every Saturday. Boy has it changed since then. When is the last time you’ve been here? Come see the changes or, for your first time! The kids will love you for it. And the best part is…IT’S FREE! The USAF Museum is open from 9am-5pm every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
For having the only United States Air Force Museum in the WORLD, Dayton sure has lapsed in the care of the areas around this very important collection of aviation history. Recently due to the Centennial of flight, area leaders were basically forced to come to terms with the problems. Currently, they are revitalizing the area around it.
Enough about that. Let’s get into the museum. As you drive up, be sure to see the outdoor planes.
Continue down the hall past the many gift shops and turn right. Your adventure begins here.
For reference: __ = ONLY ONE number/name...I made this page so you could print it and fill it out as you go.
EARLY YEARS GALLERY
We actually did this hanger last and my nephew just wanted to go home. It is near the beginning or the end of the hanger…it’s been awhile so my brain is a bit fuzzy on it.
A. The De Havilland D.H. __2A Tiger Moth made its first flight on October 26, 1931. This is a British trainer named for the designer and in recognition of his interests in moths and butterflies.
NATIONAL AVIATION HALL OF FAME
This is a very new and kid friendly environment. There are many activities that they will enjoy while relating to aviation history.
B. Look in the Golden Age section of the Hall of Fame. On September 13, 1935, Hughes set the land-plane speed record at 352,3__+__ mph in the H-1. Add the last TWO numbers for B.
MODERN FLIGHT GALLERY
TURN RIGHT as you enter this massive hanger, the first of two.
C. Walk towards the huge plane with a big black nose. Trust me…you’ll find it…you can’t miss it, even if you try!
******NEW INFO AS OF 8/1/10****** Walk to the right of the big plane and follow the pathway until you see a helicopter, a UH-19B to be exact. It was one of a few helicopters that made the first "jump over the pond" in a helicopter in 1952. It went from MA to Scotland in 5 stages. To the right of this piece of aviation history is another display about Air Force...sailors? Yes, that is correct. Find out what squadron they are talking about. They are the _ _nd C.R.B.S. (the acronym is my creation, it is actually spelled out on the display) Both blanked out numbers are the same. So either way, you need to choose one of them for C, but it really isn't a choice as they are the same number
COLD WAR GALLERY
Your first question will be answered as you walk inside. The second is currently adjacent to the C133A Cargo Master near the middle of the hangar.
D. The B-2 Spirit has the words “Fire and Ice” above the numbers 21__70 on the plane.
E. There is an F-16A on display here that once flew with the Thunderbirds. ________ Latham flew it. How many letters are in his first name? __
There is a simulator of that cockpit (E) for the kids to spend hours of fun in. My nephew got unlimited access to this and many exhibits due to the white death occurring outside.
MISSILE/SPACE GALLERY (TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION, SEE ALTERNATE STOP AS A REPLACEMENT FOR F AS OF 5/30/15)
In the hallway that takes you to this gallery, there is an interesting piece of history. They have the nose of the spacecraft that took a monkey or two and a few mice up into space. We learned today from one of the museum caretakers that the mice visible are the ones that originally went up into space. They have been preserved. I CAN assure you that the monkeys on display currently are just toys! lol.
F. The Titan I Intercontinental Ballistic Missile housed here has a number on the side of it: 4__15.
AIR POWER GALLERY (WOLRD WAR II)
G. The Curtiss P-40E __________ is one of my FAVORITES on display at the museum. It has a definite “attitude.” It would definitely scare fish if they ever start flying! lol How many letters are in the part of the name I have left out? __
THE CODE THE CODE THE CODE!!!!
N 39 BG.D(E-C)A
W 084 (C-2)(G+D).(B-C-C)(E+G-F)(A+B-E)
Now, put everything together, drive LESS THAN 1 MILE, and wallow in your success at finding a very demanding cache. This will force you to walk through a great majority of the museum. This is FAR from a park and grab, it does not have to be time consuming. I walked with a 6 year old in under two hours and we STILL didn’t see everything. The above questions are ALL based on that excursion today (12/18/07). I hope you enjoy your experience here at the USAF Museum!
